The Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, was appointed rapporteur on European directives for public procurement during the meeting of the Commission for Economic Affairs of the European Committee of the Regions.
Gualtieri will lead the work of European cities and regions on these directives, an opinion requested by the European Commission to initiate the revision process to improve the implementation of European rules, align them with other European Union policy objectives, and strengthen competitiveness.
This sector is of utmost importance to local and regional authorities, and the European Committee of the Regions will be able to draw on Mayor Gualtieri's experience to bring his voice to the European decision-making process.
Mayor Gualtieri said: "Public procurement represents investments amounting to 14% of GDP in the EU. Most of these investments are made by cities and regions. We need clearer European rules so that public procurement promotes better jobs, affordable housing, and support for the environment. I will work with other cities and regions in the European Committee of the Regions to improve the rules, promote quality of investment, workers' rights, economic growth, and build a better future for our communities."
